The Season of Growth

Ah, summer. The time of year when nature makes up for all those cold months of hibernation — and how! Everywhere you look, plants and animals alike are growing and prospering, busy going about the business of living. And the schools of the AANMC are no different — on all our campuses, the summer months are shaping up to be very busy indeed! Here’s what we’ve been up to recently…

AANMC launches centralized application service

AANMC is pleased to announce the first centralized application service for ND school applicants. Scheduled to launch in September 2011, the Naturopathic Doctor Centralized Application Service (NDCAS) will streamline the application process for prospective students applying to multiple ND schools. READ MORE >

Patient’s legacy endows new lab and scholarship

All her life, Marjorie Gage believed in the healing power of natural medicine. So grateful was she for the medical care she received from Judy Peabody, ND, that she left a $100,000 bequest to NCNM to help create a basic science lab and scholarship fund. READ MORE (page 6) >

Boucher to develop Canada’s first naturopathic midwifery program

Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine – Boucher Campus is excited to announce the development of Canada’s first naturopathic midwifery program, which will offer individual certificate courses in naturopathic therapeutics in obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics. These certificate courses will be applied to the completion of the comprehensive midwifery program. READ MORE >

Donation of rare botanical books enriches NCNM Library

The NCNM Library is about to grow significantly thanks to Michael and Simone Chilton. The couple is donating 1,500 books to the school, almost all of them about botanical plants, many of them extremely rare and valuable.These books contain information that is just so hard to come by. There are only about 30 libraries in the world, for instance, that have information about African poisonous plants, and NCNM Library is one of those. ~ Rick Severson, PhD READ MORE (page 10) >

Bastyr introduces bold curriculum changes

To better integrate scientific concepts with their clinical applications, Bastyr University is improving its ND curriculum. In fall 2012, the school’s program will shift to a systems-based focus that offers more innovative course delivery options. Students will also begin clinical rounds earlier in their educations. READ MORE >

Public opening of NCNM Min Zidell Healing Garden

The long-awaited grand opening of the Min Zidell garden is scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 24 — one day before the 2011 commencement ceremony. The event, another historic first at NCNM’s fast-growing campus, will be open to the public. READ MORE >

Palliative care pioneer Dr. John Seely receives posthumous honor from CCNM

At its 31st convocation ceremony, CCNM awarded palliative care champion Dr. John Seely an honorary doctor of naturopathic medicine diploma. Receiving the posthumous honor on behalf of his father was Dugald Seely, ND, MSc, director of research at CCNM and a presenter at AANMC’s next Webinar. Dr. John Seely opened doors that led to major research initiatives with Ottawa Hospital and other institutions. Bob Bernhardt, CCNM president and CEO, remembers Dr. Seely’s work: It was inspiring to see how open Dr. Seely was to embracing complementary care that could aid patients and advance the field of medicine. READ MORE >
