Naturopathic Curriculum

Naturopathic physicians graduate from four-year, doctoral-level medical programs. All AANMC member schools are both regionally and programmatically accredited by agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education, and faculty are leaders in their respective fields of study. Naturopathic medical education (NME) is the perfect balance of both standard foundational medical and biological sciences, and naturopathic diagnostic and therapeutic coursework. While core naturopathic coursework at all accredited programs prepares students to pass the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination (NPLEX), we recommend that students explore the curriculum and learning environment at each program to find the one that they fall in love with.

During the first two years of study, the naturopathic medical school curriculum focuses on the foundational biomedical and clinical sciences:

  • Biochemistry
  • Human Physiology
  • Histology
  • Gross Human Anatomy
  • Microbiology
  • Immunology
  • Human Pathology
  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology
  • And more…

For at least the final two years of the naturopathic medical program, students intern in clinical settings under the close supervision of licensed medical professionals.

Clinical Coursework includes:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Botanical Medicine
  • Lifestyle Counseling
  • Mind-Body Medicine
  • Laboratory and Diagnostic Medicine
  • Minor Surgery and Office Procedures
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Pharmacology
  • Physical Medicine
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Homeopathy
  • Traditional World Medicine

Today’s naturopathic physicians artfully blend modern, cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with ancient and traditional methods. They offer the world healing founded on a rational balance of tradition, science and respect for nature.
