Natural Ways to Healthier, Glowing Skin

Looking for simple ways to achieve smooth, glowing skin? There are many safe, natural steps you can take to help reduce acne, redness, and wrinkles while feeling good about what you put on your skin.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is important for your overall health, and it improves your skin, too. 1 Drinking plenty of water enhances skin’s elasticity and makes it look and feel smoother, reducing signs of aging for a youthful glow. 2 Aim to drink about 8 glasses of filtered water per day to keep your body hydrated and your skin happy.

Get Enough Sleep

There is some truth behind the idea of “beauty rest.” Getting a good sleep regularly allows for epidermal repair, resulting in fewer wrinkles, clearer skin, and a reduction in dark under-eye circles. 3 4 Working on your sleep hygiene by creating a consistent bedtime routine, going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, and avoiding screen time before bed will help you sleep better, feel more refreshed, and improve your skin.

Add Dry Brushing to Your Routine

Dry brushing has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for years with the belief that it can stimulate the lymphatic system, improve circulation, rid the body of toxins, and improve skin. While the health benefits of dry brushing have not been scientifically proven, it is an effective way to exfoliate skin and many people find it to be a simple way of adding a relaxing mini massage to their daily routine. Using a skin brush with soft, natural-fiber bristles, brush your entire body in sweeping circular motions, starting at your feet and moving upwards. This works to slough off dead skin and leave your skin feeling softer. For best results, dry brush right before you shower.

Dry brushing can irritate skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. If you have either of these, dry brushing may not be right for you.

Moisturize with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a great natural moisturizer for skin because it is extremely hydrating and it also has antimicrobial properties which help to reduce acne, cellulitis, athlete’s foot, and mild skin infections. 5 6  It is also a natural anti-inflammatory and can help reduce swelling and redness caused by psoriasis, eczema, and contact dermatitis. 7 Warm a little coconut oil in the palm of your hand to liquify it and then apply it directly to your skin. A little goes a long way–too much coconut oil can block pores and make skin feel oily, so use it sparingly.

Identify Food Sensitivities

Identifying food sensitivities and removing those foods from your diet can have a major positive impact on your skin. Skin rashes and chronic conditions such as eczema and acne are common symptoms of food sensitivity or allergy. 8 Consider trying an elimination diet in order to discover any food sensitivities you may have and try removing those foods from your diet.
