(April 21, 2014) – On April 14, 2014 Governor Martin O’Malley signed a bill to license naturopathic doctors (NDs) in the state of Maryland, making Maryland the 18th state to license naturopathic doctors. This decision comes on heels of Colorado licensing naturopathic doctors in June of 2014, the Maryland bill is set to take effect in March 2016.

“The AANMC is excited to welcome Maryland to the growing list of states that recognize the future of medicine and importance of licensing naturopathic doctors as part of that picture. Congratulations Maryland and many thanks to all who tirelessly worked to make this happen,” said Dr. JoAnn Yanez, AANMC’s executive director.

Under the new law, NDs will be licensed and regulated under the Maryland Board of Physicians. A Naturopathic Advisory Committee will be formed under the Board to support regulation.

To become a licensed ND, students must attend a four year accredited naturopathic medical school and then pass the NPLEX; a rigorous licensing exam.
