The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians held its annual conference August 15-18, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue, Wash.
Many current ND students attended the conference, both as audience members and active participants. Highlights included:
ZRT Cup
Student teams from the seven accredited ND schools participated in the ZRT Cup competition, an annual collegiate quiz bowl sponsored by ZRT Laboratory and presented by the Naturopathic Medical Student Association (NMSA).
The ND student team from theUniversity of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine (UBCNM) won first place for the third time in a row. Taking home the prize for second place was the team from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). The prize money will be used to fund naturopathic research at the winners’ respective schools.
NMSA Student Conference
On August 19-20, 2012, immediately following the AANP convention, NMSA held its 8th Annual Student Conference at the Hyatt.
The conference included two amazing days of speakers and content. Bastyr alumna Carrie Louise Daenell, ND, led the Success Bootcamp Rx practice management training for NDs, designed to help practitioners develop personalized plans and techniques to function and work more effectively and successfully.
Student Presentation at AANP
Josh Goldenberg, a current student at Bastyr University, spoke at the conference on “Shifting Attitudes Towards Research and Evidence-Based Medicine in the Naturopathic Medical Community.” It was an unusual honor for an ND student to present at this professional-level conference.
Physician of the Year Award
AANP’s Physician of the Year Award was given to Efraín Rodríguez Malavé, ND. Dr. Malavé is an NCNM alumnus and the ND program director at Universidad Del Turabo in Puerto Rico. He founded the Puerto Rico Association of Naturopathic Physicians, an AANP affiliate, in 1987.
